CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina Central University freshman Tatiana Velasquez suffered a heart-breaking setback in the pre-qualifying round of the 2007 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championship on Wednesday (Oct. 17) at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. Velasquez, a native of Cali, Columbia (South America), battled University of Memphis junior Kristin Chamberlain to a second set tie breaker, but lost 6-2, 7-6 (14-12). Velasquez will join rookie teammate Ashley Rogers, a native of Cary, N.C., in doubles competition on Thursday (Oct. 18) beginning at 2 p.m. Rogers will compete in the single main draw against Claudia Szabo of Middle Tennessee State University on Friday (Oct. 19) at 2 p.m. The 2007 ITA Southeast Regional Championship features 108 singles players and 64 doubles teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. The event, hosted by the University of North Carolina, runs through Monday, Oct. 22. |
