DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University announced the signing of five student-athletes set to complement to the 2009-2010 Lady Eagles softball team.

Shakemia Edwards, a third baseman and centerfielder from Winterville, N.C., was a contributor of South Central High School's conference, regional and state titles in 2008. "Shakemia provides all the intangibles you look for in a player," NCCU head softball coach Mike Charlton said. "She is smart, aggressive on the field."

Outfielder Nadia Jefferies heads to NCCU from Garner High School in Garner, N.C., where she currently serves as team captain and maintains a 3.6 grade point average. "If you want speed, determination, aggressiveness, passion and commitment, you've found it Nadia," said Charlton. "She is the real deal. She has even drawn comparison to current Lady Eagle standout Sophia Blue."

Heading down from Mechanicsville, Pa., Kaitlin Kramer is a second baseman and outfielder captain from Cumberland Valley High School. "Kaitlin is a wonderful addition to the NCCU Lady Eagle program," Charlton said. "Her versatility is also going to be a wonderful asset as Kaitlin will be able to roam the infield and outfield for the Lady Eagles."

Out of the Bull City's North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics comes utility outfielder player Tiffany McCreary. With a .677 batting average, she is team's "player to watch" and their clean-up hitter. "She brings wonderful energy, discipline, leadership, and aggressiveness that will help take this team to new heights," said Charlton. "If you are looking for a complete player, you have found it in Tiffany."

Rounding out the recruiting class is Kayla McPeek, a catcher from Thomas Worthington High School in Worthington, Ohio, where she currently holds a .393 batting average. The summer entering her senior year she held a stellar .529 batting average for her traveling team. "Kayla is that rare kid that can play all nine positions on the field and play them well," Charlton said. "We look forward to making a significant impact with the Lady Eagles at the plate and in the pitching circle."
