CHARLOTTE, N.C. - North Carolina Central University women's basketball junior Jori Nwachukwu and men's basketball freshman Jamar Briscoe garnered recognition on the 2008-09 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Teams announced Wednesday (April 8). Both Nwachukwu, a 5-10 center from Upper Marlboro, Md., and Briscoe, a 5-10 guard from Baltimore, Md., received Second Team recognition. The teams consist of NCAA Division I student-athletes from North Carolina colleges and universities. Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals. NCCSIA members voted for the all-state teams. The All-State basketball teams include a five-player first-team, as well as a five-player second team (plus those involved in ties). Teams are selected for men and women in both the college (Division II, III and NAIA) and university (NCAA Division I) divisions. Nwachukwu started in 22 games, while missing the last five contests due to a season-ending injury. She led the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Nwachukwu had season-highs of 34 points at Norfolk State (Jan. 15) and 15 rebounds against South Carolina State (Jan 2). She was named to the Air Force Academy All-Tournament Team, was voted HSRN Division I National Player of the Week twice, was chosen NCCU Student-Athletes of the Month for January, and was selected to the NCAA Division I All-Independent First Team. The Lady Eagles finished their second year of Division I competition with an overall record of 10-17, including a 5-3 mark at home. Briscoe was the second-leading scoring freshman in the nation, trailing only Seth Curry of Liberty, and became the first freshman in school history to score more than 500 points. As a starter in 30 of the team's 31 games as a true freshman, missing one game due to injury, Briscoe led the Eagles in scoring (535 points / 17.8 avg.), assists (79 / 2.6 avg.) and steals (53 / 1.8 avg.).
He scored more than 20 points in a game 11 times, including five games with 30 or more. Here are a few of Briscoe's top performances: 37 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals vs. Longwood (Feb. 28); 28 points, 4 assists, 4 steals at North Carolina State (Feb. 3); 34 points, 3 assists at Duquesne (Dec. 22); 24 points, 3 assists, 2 steals at Arkansas (Dec. 10); 34 points at Longwood (Feb. 25); 32 points vs. Chicago State (Jan. 10); 31 points vs. Chowan (Jan. 17); 19 points at South Carolina (Dec. 16); 18 points at No. 21 Wake Forest (Nov. 14); 18 points at Kansas State (Feb. 17); 28 points vs. Savannah State (Jan. 31); 26 points vs. High Point (Dec. 3). Briscoe has also been honored as the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) Division I Men's Basketball National Rookie of the Year and the NCAA Division I Independent Newcomer of the Year. The Eagles finished their second year of Division I competition with an overall record of 4-27, including a season-ending victory over rival Winston-Salem State in the MEAC Tournament "Bonus Game" on March 14. Founded in 2002, the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information. NCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, softball and baseball. More than 400 student-athletes have been recognized by NCCSIA as all-state performers since 2003.
