PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - North Carolina Central University finished in a tie for fifth place at the 23rd PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Sunday, marking the best finish for the Eagles at the national championship event since 2006.

The Eagles fired a final-round 302 for a three-day score of 892 (296-294-302), equaling the team total of the Bulldogs of South Carolina State.

"I thought they really played up to their potential," said NCCU head coach Paul Perry. "They have matured a lot since the start of the season. I think they got a little tired on the third day, which caused our scores to go up."

Senior Chris Winters topped NCCU with an even-par 72, with five birdies on the day. The Durham, N.C. native finished the weekend with a five-under-par 211 (70-69-72), tying for fifth place in the individual standings.

Winters capped his college career in style, sinking a 20-foot birdie putt on his final shot as an NCCU Eagle.

"Chris is our captain and he has shown a tremendous amount of leadership, both on and off the course," said Perry. "His hard work and leadership has shown the way. These past few days he has proven to me and many others that hard work can pay off."

NCCU freshman Braden Cox used four birdies to post a 76 (+4) in his final round. Senior Josue Garza and junior Juan Sanchez each carded a 77 (+5), while freshman Ronald Royster added an 83 (+11).

Perry had high praise for his team after the season-ending event. "I told them that I was extremely proud of them - the way they played and they way they conducted themselves," he said. "I am pleased with what they have shown on the course and in the classroom. If they continue on this path, there is not doubt that this program will go far."

Other Comments from NCCU Head Coach Paul Perry:

"Josue has meant much to this team. He did not play as well as he or I wanted him to this weekend. However, he has shown much leadership during the year and I am looking forward to him working with some of our younger players. I still feel he has what it takes to play on the next level because of his ability, his distance and his work ethic."

"With the recruitment of Juan Sanchez and Braden Cox, I felt all year that these two young men have put us in a position that we could do bigger and better things. If both of them work this hard this summer as they have all year, we should be one of the top minority teams in the country."

"Their play the past few days is really making me look forward to next year. It made me see what is possible."
