North Carolina Central University men' basketball student-athlete Tremain Holloway has been named Mr. NCCU for 2009-10.

The Rocky Mount, N.C., native and Rocky Mount Senior High graduate is a rising senior majoring in Mathematics (Secondary Education) with a minor in Computer Science. Having a mother as an alumna and the fact that a family-orientation is felt on campus helped make the decision for Holloway to attend NCCU. The fact that the institution is an HBCU also aided in sealing the deal.

Before this year's Mr. and Miss NCCU pageant, Holloway was no stranger to competing in pageants. His history of being in this type of competition goes back to his high school days when he placed second in the Mr. Delta Sigma Theta pageant.

As far as being involved in prior pageants at NCCU, Holloway was also Mr. Freshman on NCCU's royal court when he ran two years ago.

When he's not running up and down the court or strolling down pageant runways, Holloway keeps busy in a few other things. He came to NCCU on a North Carolina Teacher's Fellowship scholarship. After graduation, he will be teaching for a minimum of four years.

With a 3.4 grade point average and his large school involvement, Holloway knows that he is a great representation of exactly what Mr. NCCU should be. Holloway is also a member of the Pan-Hellenic Council Fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi. He feels that he has wonderful leadership qualities as well.

Being a student-athlete has taught Holloway important things about life in general. How to be in control and how to have balance when you have a lot on your plate are just a couple of lessons. He also adds that when it comes to being a student-athlete, it is important to remember that student comes before athlete.

When asked how winning Mr. NCCU made him feel, the smile gives the answer. He proceeds with the response, "Elated... even though I was the only one who ran."

Holloway feels this occurred since others who may have wanted to run against him did not meet the requirements to participate. Nevertheless, Holloway proceeded in the competition as if he was not running by himself.

Holloway considers singing his hidden talent, although when competing in away games the talent is heard during bus rides. During the Mr. and Miss NCCU pageant, Holloway sang Stevie Wonder's "Knocks Me Off My Feet."

When Holloway's days as an undergrad at NCCU are over, he may just stick around. "I kind of like Durham," he said. "It's growing on me."
