June 10, 2009 DURHAM, N.C.- North Carolina Central University Head Baseball Coach, Dr. Henry White, took time to sit down with Chris Hooks, play-by-play voice of the NCCU Sports Network to talk about the 2009 baseball season. The Eagles just completed their second season at the Division I level, their thrid since resurrecting the program after it was dropped back in 1975. In other news regarding the baseball team, NCCU had two members of the squad named to the 2009 NCAA Division I Independent All-Academic team. Sophomores Brandon Oatis and Robert Grant made the squad, which requires its student-athletes to maintain a GPA above 3.30. Oatis is a Marketing major with a concentration in Business Administration from Matthews, N.C. and sports a 3.62 GPA, which is the highest on the squad. Oatis threw the second most innings on the team by tossing 46.0 innings, but was No. 1 on the roster with 38 strikeouts on the season. His lone win was a historic one for NCCU baseball, where the lefty threw a complete game four-hitter against Savannah State on March 7, allowing just one run and fanning seven Tiger batters to wrap up NCCU's first-ever doubleheader sweep at the Division I level. He also struck out at least one batter in 13 of his 15 outings in the 2009 season. The second Eagle on the All-Academic team, Grant, hails from Haw River, N.C. and boasts a 3.56 GPA as a Physical Education major. The sophomore made significant strides behind the plate in 2009 getting 23 starts and finishing with a .233 batting average with eight RBI on the season. Grant batted .304 (7-for-23) with runners in scoring position, and tied for first on the team with five two-out RBI. His highlight game of the season came on March 10 against Coppin State where he went two-for-three at the plate with three RBI in NCCU's 8-5 win. His leadoff double in the fifth inning in game one of the season finale against University of Maryland-Eastern Shore sparked a four-run frame that vaulted the Eagles to the 7-6 victory over the Hawks.
