Brandon Oatis has the highest GPA on the team (3.62)

June 4, 2009

DURHAM, N.C.- Two student-athletes from the 2009 North Carolina Central University baseball team earned a spot on the 2009 NCAA Division I Independent Baseball All-Academic Team. The sophomore duo of left-handed pitcher Brandon Oatis and catcher Robert Grant both surpassed the 3.30 cumulative grade point average required to make the squad, along with being vital contributors to the 2009 Eagles baseball team.

Oatis is a Marketing major with a concentration in Business Administration from Matthews, N.C. and sports a 3.62 GPA, which is the highest on the squad. Oatis threw the second most innings on the team by tossing 46.0 innings, but was No. 1 on the roster with 38 strikeouts on the season. His lone win was a historic one for NCCU baseball, where the lefty threw a complete game four-hitter against Savannah State on March 7, allowing just one run and fanning seven Tiger batters to wrap up NCCU's first-ever doubleheader sweep at the Division I level. He also struck out at least one batter in 13 of his 15 outings in the 2009 season.

The second Eagle on the All-Academic team, Grant, hails from Haw River, N.C. and boasts a 3.56 GPA as a Physical Education major. The sophomore made significant strides behind the plate in 2009 getting 23 starts and finishing with a .233 batting average with eight RBI on the season. Grant batted .304 (7-for-23) with runners in scoring position, and tied for first on the team with five two-out RBI. His highlight game of the season came on March 10 against Coppin State where he went two-for-three at the plate with three RBI in NCCU's 8-5 win. His leadoff double in the fifth inning in game one of the season finale against University of Maryland-Eastern Shore sparked a four-run frame that vaulted the Eagles to the 7-6 victory over the Hawks.

"We are extremely proud of all our student-athletes," said Director for Student Athlete Support Services Anthony Bennett. "I am appreciative to our students who have committed themselves to being student-athletes. I am grateful to our coaches who do a great job of working with our student-athletes to make sure their academic needs are met. We also have an outstanding faculty at NCCU who inspire our student-athletes to accomplish great things in the classroom. We are constantly striving to attain a 3.0 grade point average as a department and are slowly closing that gap as we recorded a cumulative 2.849 GPA at the conclusion of the spring semester."
