DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina Central University cross country team will travel to Pembroke, N.C. to compete in its season opener at the Pembroke Invitational on Friday (Sept. 5). Last season, the Eagles swept the invitational by earning first place in both the men's and women's categories. This season, the team will travel to six of their seven meets including a trip to Orlando, Fla. for the Walt Disney Classic on Oct. 9, and then concluding the season by hosting the NCCU Eagle Classic in Durham, N.C. on Oct. 18. This year three freshmen were added to the men's roster. "On the men's side we were able to keep some strength on our team in Brandon Jones, James Kukat and Gerald Jones," said head coach Michael Lawson. "We also added a strong distance runner in freshman Jamar Jones." Also adding to the freshmen class are Jamal Davis and Quantae Holliman. "Overall as a division one program we are getting stronger and still remain a strong competitor," Lawson said. The women also added three newcomers this year. Lawson looks for freshman Dreanna Wallace to play a key role this season. "Although as a freshman she may lack in some experience, she brings a lot of heart to the game," said Lawson. The women will continue to be strong like last season with the leadership of Desinia Johnson and Ashley Cooke. "The three freshmen combined with their veteran teammates should continue to be strong pointers, and very easily make the team strong in competition," said Lawson.
When asked about overall expectations for the team this season, Lawson said, "I expect our team to lead a more tactful race. At any given time, we have three to four individuals who could easily be lead runners. All of our student-athletes are in good spirits and we look forward to a great season." First race for the Pembroke Invitational is slated at 6 p.m. For more information on NCCU Athletics visit www.NCCUEaglePride.com. (Written by Nicole Mitchell, Sports Information Graduate Assistant) |
