DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University junior James Kukat (Nakuru, Kenya) led the Eagles with a strong first place finish against North Carolina A&T Saturday (Oct. 17) during the NCCU Cross Country Classic, held at Forest Hills Park in Durham, N.C. Kukat completed the 7k-course in 25 minutes and 13 seconds, beating out N.C. A&T's Steven Leggins by 52 seconds. The second Eagle to cross the finish line was freshman Rashawn Council (Winston-Salem, N.C.), completing the course in 28:26 to place sixth. NCCU seniors Desinia Johnson (Raleigh, N.C.) and Ashley Cooke (Hampton, Va.) finished the women's the 5k-course in the top five during their final collegiate cross country event. Johnson completed the course in 19:34, good for third place as the top Lady Eagle finisher. Fellow senior Cooke placed fourth with a course completion time of 20:07. NCCU sophomore Dreanna Wallace (Orlando, Fla.) fell shy of placing in the top five for the Eagles by three seconds (6th, 20:40). Overall, the men's and women's team finished second to N.C. A&T. Head coach Michael Lawson will now prepare the Eagles for their indoor track and field season.
