CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina Central University captured two event victories and placed in the top three positions 10 times during the 2008 Tony Waldrop Track & Field Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Saturday, April 12. NCCU senior Maurice Gailey, who won the 200-meter dash last week at North Carolina A&T, earned first place in the 100m dash on Saturday with a time of 10.68 seconds. Saint Augustine's Sharif Nash also finished in 10.68 seconds to tie Gailey fir first place, while Aulton Kohn of Syracuse University settled for third (10.72). Gailey, a native of Pensacola, Fla., also placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 21.55 seconds. NCCU's other event victory was claimed by junior Will Scott, who leaped 15.07 meters (49-feet, 5.5 inches) to win the triple jump. Scott beat out Donte Nall of host North Carolina. Scott, a native of Charlotte, N.C., also finished third in the long jump with a distance of 6.89 meters (22-7.25). NCCU junior Eric Smalls (Raleigh, N.C.) placed second in the shot put with a heave of 15.93 meters (52-3.25), only four inches shy of the event winner Ian Reynolds of North Carolina. Smalls also finished fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 44.23 meters (145-1). The NCCU men placed third in the 4x100m relay with a time of 40.71 seconds. On the women's side, NCCU took second place in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:49.80, trailing only event winner North Carolina (3:42.56). NCCU junior Latisha Jones (Ahoskie, N.C.) placed second in the long jump with a leap of 5.56 meters (18-3) to top the Lady Eagles. NCCU juniors Jessica Mills (Thorofare, N.J.) and Latasha Jones (New Bern, N.C.) placed third in their respective events. Mills recorded a distance of 11.83 meters (38-9.75) in the triple jump, while Jones posted a toss of 13.11 meters (43-0.25) in the shot put. |
