WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University track and field team took a short trip to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete at Wake Forest University in the Wake Forest Open on Saturday. The NCCU field team took the lead with five student-athletes finishing within the top 20. Senior Eric Smalls took top NCCU honors finishing second place in the discus throw competition with a distance of 50.45 meters, followed by Michael Schalmo of Duke University in third place with a distance of 48.98m. In the women's discus throw competition, NCCU junior Brandy Cox finished in 11th place throwing a distance of 38.67m. Adding to the top 20 finishes were sophomore Saqenda Dallas in the long jump (17th, 5.12m), senior Will Scott in the men's long jump competition (13th, 6.52m) and freshman Paig Robinson in the javelin throw competition (15th, 35.00m). On the track side of the competition, the 4x100 meter relay teams were on the same page, both finishing in third place for NCCU. The men's team ran a collective time of 41.92, while the women paced a time of 48.05. NCCU ran two groups for the women's 4x400 meter relay with "A" finishing in third place with a time of 3:48.23 and "B" in 13th in 3:59.37. Rounding out the top finishers for the Eagles were Saqenda Dallas, 12th, women's 200m dash, (25.74); Chrystal Shephard, 20th, women's 200m dash, (25.96); and Charles Lindsay, 8th, men's 400m hurdles, (54.52); Next competition for the Eagles will be the Raleigh Relays on the campus of NC State University on Friday-Saturday, March 27-28.
