Jan. 19, 2008 CLEMSON, S.C. - The North Carolina Central University men's indoor track & field team, in its first year as an NCAA Division I program, placed fourth at the Clemson Invitational on Saturday powered by two event victories and seven top three finishes. With 72 points, NCCU placed ahead of established Division I programs such as fifth place Georgia Tech (67 points), sixth place Auburn (49 points) and seventh place Wake Forest (41 points). Invitational host Clemson won the meet with 133.5 points, followed by second place Georgia (102 points) and third place Charlotte (83 points). NCCU sophomore Mark Davis enjoyed a big day for the Eagles. Davis won the high jump with a leap of 6-feet, 8.25-inches, beating out second-place efforts by Daniel Averso of Georgia and Timothy Reen of Florida State. He also placed second in the long jump with a distance of 23' 8.75", trailing only Dexter Adams of N.C. State. The Eagle duo of sophomore Brandon Jones and senior Rashaad Lee swept the top two spots in the 800-meter run. Jones ran to victory with a time of 1:54.35, while Lee captured second place with a run of 1:55.47. The pair also joined forces with senior Maurice Gailey and freshman Chris Hall to earn a third-place finish in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:20.64. Gailey also placed second in the 200m dash with a time of 21.96, while junior Chris Davis placed second in the 60m dash with a time of 6.77 seconds. The NCCU women were led by freshman Saqenda Dallas, who placed sixth in the long jump (18' 0.5") and 13th in the triple jump (35' 0.5"). As a team the Lady Eagles finished in a tie for 15th place with four points. |
