Aug. 10, 2009

DID YOU KNOW? Legendary NCCU head football coach George Quiett received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his service in Korea with the U.S. Army from 1950-53.

Quiett boasts the second-highest winning percentage in the program's history (.734) with a record of 34-12-1 as head coach from 1968-72. He directed the Eagles to 9-2 mark and the MEAC championship title in 1972.

He was named CIAA Coach of the Year in 1969 and MEAC Coach of the Year in 1971. Quiett was tagged twice as the NAIA District 26 Coach of the Year (1969, 1972), and was selected Division II Regional Coach of the Year in 1972.

For his gridiron accomplishments, Quiett was inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.

As part of North Carolina Central University's Centennial celebration, the NCCU Department of Athletics will post sports history facts from the institution's first 100 years to its official web site, www.NCCUEaglePride.com, every Monday during the year-long observance.
